Raffle to Help Sandy- February 2000 SPECIAL UPDATE ADDED BELOW....SEE A GREAT SMILING SANDY PIC
This Special Raffle was held to help Sandy out. Please see the "raffle" page for details on the prizes and how to enter....below are tiny, thumbnails of the prizes...2 cool eskie shirts and 4 cool eskie signs! Don't miss out!
Her name is Sandy, the "honoree" of the newest raffle. She is a sweet Eskie and has suffered so much. She is not a young dog. She is not at all aggressive and does not appear to know what "love" is. It seems to be foreign to her. Kitten rescued this female "Angel" out of an animal control shelter in FL. She had been there for five days with a broken leg laying on concrete!!! She had surgery on Fri, Jan 21. The vet had to pin the bone AND splint it. The leg was horribly shattered. Vet says the break could not have been in a worse bone, a "tibular" break and a very bad one. She had to remain at the vet's over the weekend. She was somewhat dehydrated and had an infection in the leg. Kitten brought Sandy home Jan 25th. The vet says Sandy is not snapping back the way he had hoped. She is an older dog (appr. 11 yrs.) and he says she is in pretty run down condition. He has put her on a Purina ONE and cottage cheese diet to build her up. She will have to go back for several more visits for the leg. He can't spay her until the leg is completely healed. The vet will work
with Kitten and let her pay it off in payments. She has been heart worm tested. NEGATIVE!!!!! Kitten willl give her the parvo/distemper/parainfluenza shot tomorrow(Jan. 26th) if the vet says it is okay to do so. She will get her rabies shot when the vet allows it. He wants to space them out due to her condition. She laid in that kennel for five days with that leg and there is no telling how long it had been broken before they caught her. She is TERRIBLY matted and absolutely filthy. Kitten cannot bathe her because of the cast so she will have to wait for that. Kitten treated her TWICE with Frontline. She was VERY infested with ticks and fleas. She seems a lot more comfortable now, but it breaks Kitten's heart to see the look in her eyes. Kitten has done rescue long enough to know this look. It is the, "Whatever's gonna happen next is gonna happen no matter what. If they pet me, fine. If they hit me, fine. I just don't care anymore." It is the look of total hopelessness. She accepts petting and food, but there is no expression to her eyes. Her soul is in "lockdown" mode. Kitten will be working with her in the next few days to try to let her know that things will be better from now on. So everyone, say a prayer that Sandy gives Kitten that "look" Kitten is hoping for. You know the one. The "Gosh I'm glad to see you!" look. Right now, Kitten will settle for just a flicker of that look. |

UPDATE: January 27th, Kitten informed us of the following....she's getting the FIRST glimpes of "hope" in Sandy's attitude....see for yourself...is this girl improving or what!?!?! Sandy did NOTHING yesterday but lay flat on her side. I really felt like she was giving up. The only time she would get up or raise up was when I would go out and roll her over on her belly or pick her up to get her on her feet go out. I had to do a career day talk to do at the local middle school today on animal related careers. I had planned to take Sandy to the vet immediately upon returning from that. When I returned home and went in to check on her, she was laying on her stomach and holding her head up. After lots of praise and loving she got up on her own. I opened the door for her to see if she would go out on her own and she actually did walk out the door but did an immediate turnaround and came right back in. I then leashed her and took her out to potty. She did her business and wanted to come right back in. She has moved around a little more today than she did yesterday. I ran out for an hour tonight to get a bite to eat. When I came back I walked into the kitchen (the laundry room is just off the kitchen) and called her name. When I got into the laundry room she was standing up as if she had gotten up at the sound of my voice and was waiting to see me!!!!!! She still had "that look" but at least she was on her feet of her own accord!!! THEN!!!!!!!! At about 9:30 I was in
the kitchen washing up the dog dishes and looked into the laundry
room. She was sitting in her bed, watching me and SMILING at
me!!!!!!!!! Naturally I went to her and held her and crooned to her what a good, sweet, girl she was. She took it all with a grain of salt but "sort of" nuzzled her face into the hand I was petting her head with. I ran and got the camera, PRAYING that
she would keep smiling but when I got back she was resting again.
