Auction Information Page - April/May 2000 Sandy's Story! My name is Sandy, a very sweet Eskie. I have suffered so much. I am not a young dog, am not aggressive at all. At one time I did not know what love was. It was foreign to me. My fosterMom Kitten Jones rescued me from an animal control shelter in FL. I had been there for 5 days with a broken leg laying on concrete!! I had surgery on Fri, Jan 21. The vet had to pin the bone AND splint it. My leg was horribly shattered. Vet says the break could not have been in a worse bone, a "tibular" break and a very bad one. I remained at the vet's over the weekend. I was somewhat dehydrated and had an infection in the leg too. Kitten brought me home on Jan 25th. The vet said I was not snapping back the way he had hoped. I am approx. 11 yrs old and was in a very run down condition. He put me on a Purina ONE and cottage cheese diet to build me up. I can't be spayed until the leg is completely healed.
It was breaking
Kitten's heart to see the look in my eyes. Kitten has done rescue
long enough to know this look. It was the, "Whatever's gonna
happen next is gonna happen no matter what. If they pet me, fine.
If they hit me, fine. I just don't care anymore." It is
the look of total hopelessness. I accepted petting and food,
but there was no expression to my eyes. My soul was in "lockdown"
mode. I did NOTHING but lay flat on |

Shortly after that I was sitting in my bed, watching Mom and SMILING at her!!! Boy did she ever get happy!! I think they are called tears of joy!! My smile was weak, but it was a SMILE!!!!!!!! This was the very FIRST expression Mom had seen on my face other than the "hopeless" look. |
Slowly but surely I got better. I even took my own cast off! According to Mom, I was NOT suppose to do that! I was tired of that thing. Then I got sick again and held my head cocked. This turned out to be an inner ear infection. I finally got over that.
I had been doing beautifully and would play and run when I felt really good. You know how we elderly dogs are. We lie around a lot, but at times we get spurts of energy. I was so happy to have love at last.
Then on April 16, I started throwing up. I was due to go to the vet on Tuesday to see if the leg had finally healed enough to remove the pin. But Mom took me in on Monday. The vet ex-rayed my leg and was shocked to find that the surgical steel pin had broken. He says it could NOT have been ME that broke it. It had to be defective. He went into the leg to try to retrieve the small piece that had broken off, but could not find it. He says that it will migrate out through the skin after a while. He says the pin that is still in the leg cannot be retrieved without re-breaking the leg and he does not think that would be wise because of my age and the fact that it took the other break so long to heal. By the way, the OLD break has finally healed beautifully.
