"Heavenly 8" Fundraiser- Raffle June/July 2000

The "Heavenly 8" story:

Terry Thistlethwaite, Heart Bandits Ridgecrest, CA chapter has been through a serious and devastating ordeal that lasted from the beginning of February through the end of April. A rescue Eskie that she took in was a carrier of a mutated form of distemper. This mutated distemper first infected Terry's assistance

dog, Grace. The illness in Grace was misdiagnosed as pneumonia. Terry's collie, Zephyr, also came down sick shortly after. Both dogs were taken to a specialist veterinary facility in San Diego. This facility was highly recommended as a diagnostic facility. They failed to recognize the illness as mutated distemper, and sent Gracie and Zephyr home with antibiotics.

Terry dutifully followed Dr's orders, even going so far as to set up oxygen chambers for Gracie and Zephyr. Grace developed neurological problems, and went out of her mind. Terry had to have her beloved assistance dog, Grace, put to sleep. Terry continued nursing Zephyr through her myriad of strange symptoms. Zephyr was mother to a litter of beautiful collie pups, the first in 5 years. There were 5 pups : Paddington, Cherish, Blessing, Japheth, and Lovey. All of the pups eventually came down sick. Sebastian, HoneyBear, Ashley and Peanut (the other adult Collies) came down sick as well. The Collies remained fairly bright and active, continuing to eat and play. Somehow, Terry's American Eskimo "Joy", her Maltese "Trinket", and her white German Shepherd "Skyloh", escaped the deadly disease. The rescue Eskie that brought the distemper did not come down sick, and has been adopted into a new loving home.

There is no standard medical treatment for distemper, but holistic veterinarians have had great success in treating distemper with an intravenous Vit C treatment. Terry searched and searched for a vet hospital that would be willing to administer the Vit C treatment. A lot of vets refused to even try to treat the dogs. One vet promised to administer the Vit C treatment, but used other treatment instead, which eventually failed, and used up precious time. Paddington and Lovey began to have seizures. Terry lost Lovey puppy.

Thoroughly heartsick and exhausted, Terry continued to try to save her remaining dogs. A hospital in Bishop agreed to do the C treatment. Sebastian, Zephyr, Paddington, and Cherish were admitted to begin receiving treatment. The hospital called Terry, saying that one of the dogs had died. It was Paddington. They also said they did not want to continue to keep the contagious dogs in their facility. Terry made the long drive to pick the dogs up. Sebastian had gotten much worse and was in evident pain. Terry had to let Sebastian go. The hospital agreed to keep Paddinton and Sebastian's bodies, until Terry could come back and pick them up to have them cremated. When Terry called the hospital a few days later to make arrangements to pick up Paddington and Sebastian's bodies, she was told that they had sent Paddington and Sebastian's bodies to the dump.

All Care Veterinary Referral Center agreed to treat the remaining dogs. Terry made the drive to All Care in the middle of the night, directly from the hospital in Bishop. Peanut, Ashley, HoneyBear, Japheth and Blessing were admitted and began the Vit C treatment. The next day Cherish and Zephyr were also admitted. Japheth and Zephyr were sent home, as they appeared to be well enough. Zephyr was not well enough, and began to have neurological symptoms. Terry had to have Zephyr put to sleep.

The dogs at All Care received the Vit C treatment. HoneyBear and Cherish did not get better, and had to be put down. Peanut, Ashley, and Blessing appeared to make improvement. Ashley did so well she was allowed to go home. Japheth began to get sick, and was admitted to begin the Vit C treatment immediately. Japheth responded very well, and was released after a fairly brief stay. Peanut also pulled through and was sent home. Blessing struggled on the longest, and appeared to make progress, but then took a turn for the worse. Blessing died in the hospital.

Of the 11 dogs who came down sick, only 3 survived (Peanut, Ashley and Japheth). Terry, as you can imagine, is heartbroken with the loss of her beloved dogs. Terry is also now burdened with the enormous veterinary bills incurred during these 3 months of illness.

MEET THE DOGS

Below is the "financial" circumstances. If you would like to read more about Terry's dogs, we have setup a separate "meet the dogs" page to honor these beloved companions....please "click here" to see the pictures and learn more about them!

Bills already paid:
Donations received directly by the vet facility amount to:
$2,535
Dan has verified each donation with the person who sent it (to make sure the hospital recorded them accurately). Thanks to all of you who have already donated....it is VERY much appreciated!

Outstanding bills still remaining are:
Donations received through Heart Bandits Eskie rescue is
$300 and will be forwarded to the vet hospital.
Still Owed to All Care after the $300 from HB:

(Yes, folks.....Terry had incurred a total of 18000-ish in bills!!! Kim/Dan have put a certain amount on CCs, and some has been donated already, but ideally we would to to raise $15000+ to finish these bills off. We know that is a LOT, but it is a lot for any one person to face alone. Remember, Terry not only lost 8 dogs during this time, but incurred bills amounting to $18K+.....how would any of us face this!?!?! Wouldn't it be great if a few of us had an extra $5000 or $10000 laying around we could help Terry with!?!?!?! Well.....maybe we don't, but maybe more of have an extra $5 or $10 we could add to help out Terry......so whether you want to donate direct and/or bid on auction items please think how much we can all help out!)

$20 donation from Carolyn Doll
$100 from "East Coast Get-together"
$84 "leftover" from Buddy/Pals auction.
$1848 pledged from the June/July Auction
$627 raised in the June/July raffle
$2679.00 raised from these efforts so far!

Please join in helping Terry get these bills down to a manageable amount. We would love to be able to help her pay off every cent, but in the very least, let's raise as much as possible to help out. If any of us had lost a single beloved companion we'd be devastated as well......and to imagine losing 8. Just take a look in your dog's eyes......and you know that the love of your dog is not only precious, it's pricless.....there are few expenses any of us would spare for the life of any our dogs. Let us extend ourselves for a friend, and a friend of the eskies and collies.....though we can't bring "the heavenly 8" back to be with Terry, we CAN help in reducing the bills she incurred down to a managaeble amount......every dollar adds up folks...please help all you can......we're offering some great items in this fundraiser and the more support we can bring together, the greater help we can be.

Raffle #2 is now open until July 31st....please see the July "raffle" page for details! 10 GREAT items available in the raffle, and tickets are only $1 each!

Results from the "June/July" Raffle(#1), can be found on the #1 raffle page.

Address comments, questions, etc. on items to Pat Cassel at pcassel@pa.net !

The June/July is now over, but you can find results on the auction pages! Thanks for helping the eskies(and others too)!
