"Heavenly 8" Fundraiser- June/July 2000

MEET THE DOGS

Trinket, Joy, Zephyr, Piper, & 3 day old pups

Grace, Hunnibare, Zephyr, and Sebastian had all earned the Versatility Companion Excellent title from Clever Canine Companions all breed working dog registry. All were working therapy dogs, taking turns visiting local hospitals and long term care facilities, and each had their own special way with the patients. They took part in numerous public relations events, manning the booths at hospital fairs, Scottish festivals, and educational events to promote their breed, highlight their work, and most importantly; to foster educational and awareness of the human-canine bond.

It was Sebastian who first adopted Trinket, my little Maltese, encouraging the tiny puppy to eat out of his bowl and run to him for protection. He was the great defender of all creatures small and helpless-and affectionately known as "Uncle Sebastian" long before his sister, Zephyr, actually made him an uncle.

Zephyr got her conformation certification just last year, with all five group and best in show judges scoring her excellent on points of temperament, soundness, and structure. She had waited five years to be a mommy, and enjoyed every minute with her five beautiful babies-all of whom were intended to stay with us forever. She also adored Hunnibare, the father of her puppies, and especially delighted in watching him play with one or more of them.

 Grace, Joy, and Trinket......all aboard!?!

Hunnibare was a group-placing show dog who especially loved sleeping on my waterbed and filling in for Grace as my assistance dog. Along with Grace, he was featured, by invitation, on Who's Who of Dogs several years ago. His sweet, easygoing nature lives on in his only surviving offspring, Japheth.

Japheth

Grace was my Assistance Dog, mother of Zephyr and Sebastian, and grandmother of the five puppies. She was one of only two collies to win the Outstanding Versatility title, and was featured in a number of local newspapers and national and international magazine articles- both health related, and dog related publications. Grace's picture has appeared on the cover of the International Association of Assistance Dog Partners newsletter, as well as in Who's Who of Dogs. She also earned many working titles, including Therapy Dog, Carting Dog, Backpack Dog, Herding Certification, and Conformation Certification (where one Best in Show Judge called her "the best example of a beautiful collie I've seen in many years"). She loved her two puppies, adored her five grand-puppies, and for 10 years provided me with a reason to get up in the morning.

The puppies were: Lovey- such a combination of Grace and Zephyr that it was truly awesome; Paddington- the big, beautiful boy with Grace's gorgeous face; Cherish- who inherited so much of Grace's father both in looks and personality; Blessing- who despite looking nothing like Grace's mother, would become so identical to her in every other way; and Japheth- the big, sweet, smooth coated blue merle boy who alone survived.

Blessing as a babe!

...and as a darling puppy!

Of the adults, we have Hunnibare's brother, Peanut, who has taken on Zephyr's job of watching for the mailman, and Grace's job of watching over me; and his sister, Ashley- who has always been everyone's "adopted mother", and is now the only "Collie mom" in the household. Ashley now dutifully cleans Japheth's face and ears every night before she goes to bed. She also looks after Piper and London (the two shelties); Joy, our little Eskie; Trinket, the Maltese "Collie", and even the German shepherd who towers over her, Skyloh.

Zephyr and Joy

Most people who come here and see eight dogs believe that our home is very full, but without Grace and Hunnibare, Zephyr and Sebastian; and with the sudden absence of the long awaited babies, Lovey, Paddington, Cherish and Blessing; it is, to the rest of us very empty indeed.
