October 2000 Raffle for IMOM!

IMOM is an all volunteer non-profit 501(c)3 organization founded in November 1998. You can learn more about IMOM on their own site. Their primary focus is in offering financial aid for emergency veterinary care to ANY companion animal whose "person" or "people" have found themselves in financial difficulty and faced with either a last resort effort of help, or losing their pet. IMOM is the saving grace for many pets in need. Below you can read some briefings on some of the "pets in need" that IMOM is helping or seeking to help. Please help out by donating as you can. You can read more about IMOM and these(and the many other) pets in need that IMOM is seeking to help, on their own IMOM Site!

JJ

Diagnosis: Bilateral Hip Dysplasia
Need: URGENT!
JJ, a young golden retriever, was diagnosed with Bilateral Hip Dysplasia at a very young age(under one year), and as their beloved family pat, JJ's family is seeking to do all they can for him!

At 10 months old, JJ is still hanging in there. He has trouble walking, and he often just uses three legs to get around or occasionally we need to lift him up into the car when we take him for the rides which he loves.

Please help us save this puppy who could lead a normal life if given the opportunity to receive the surgery he really needs and put a smile on his family's when they know JJ will be okay.

(you can read more about JJ on IMOM's Site!)

Silky is a year-old Quarter Horse, a feisty animal with a major problem: She has degenerative arthritis in her right foot, caused by a bad trauma. Abuse by her previous owners is suspected.

Silky's foot will never heal without surgery. She will be in pain, become lame in the other leg and suffer arthritis in her knees. Eventually, she will become stiff and have to be euthanized. Already her person can see her other leg changing shape to take some of the weight.

Silky needs surgery to relieve her pain and give her a chance to live out her life. Her chances for recovery are presently 80% and decrease, as she gets older. Her person wants to give her a good home and care for her.

She is cute and very sweet. She has a new home, where at first she was shy. But with a little TLC that has changed. She likes to roam in her pasture with her two buddies, a mare and a little gelding. They are inseparable.

Silky loves to eat sweet homemade molasses treats, her favorite. She also likes grain, sugar cubes, and apples. Whenever her person is carrying a bucket, Silky politely insists on carrying it. Her person calls her "soft hearted and very good. She learns quickly and likes to be stubborn when she thinks she can win."

Silky can win her struggle to overcome pain and abuse, with our help. We can make a difference for this beautiful, loyal companion animal.

Silky

Diagnosis: Degenerative Arthritis in her right foot

Remie

Diagnosis: Torn cruciate ligament

From Remie's owner: I am a single mother of a seven year old son. For numerous years we have had Cheapeakes.  In December of 1999, we lost our 8 year old female to kidney failure.  "Tessie" and my son, Robert, were the very best of friends. From the time he was born, they were inseparable.  Though we have another Chessie, it's just not the same to Robert. On Labor Day weekend, I adopted a four year old female Chessie from a Virginia Chessie Rescue Group.  My son and I picked this dog because of her resemblance to Tessie.  We named her "Remie."  The very first day she was in our house, she and Robert fell in love with each other.  Remie sleeps on his bed with her head on his stomach (just like Tess used to do), they play, they cuddle, they are best of buds.  Although I knew there was a potential

problem with her leg from the Rescue Group, none of us suspected the extent of her problem.  When Robert throws the ball, she'll get it for him no matter what!!  I took her to the vet Wednesday and received the news.  Dr. Palmer has told us that if we do not have the leg fixed soon, the other leg can also be hurt and she will become lame in both legs. When Robert heard, he told me I could have the money (all $30.00 of it) in his piggy bank that he is saving to buy a horse.  He looked at me with his big blue eyes and asked me to do whatever I could not to lose Remie like we lost Tessie.  Rem is a very good girl.  She has fit into our family so quickly and easily.  She so obviously needed a child to love and Robert so obviously needed his own girl to love that the two of them have bonded so quickly.  While Remie is 93 pounds of energy, she does whatever Robert tells her and they so obviously adore one another.  I have been training my male Chessie in Search and Rescue for the last year.  When I adopted Remie, it was my intent to train her also.  With her leg as it is, I cannot.  The mountains here would prevent her being able to do such a thing because of the leg.  If I can get it fixed, then I can train her.  My other Chessie is very good at it, but can sometimes be pig headed.  I felt that Remie would have been perfect for it.  I so want the chance to see what she can do with the tracking!  As a single parent, I am occasionally financially challenged, especially because Robert and I so love pets.  We rescued a stray cat, found a turtle, "inherited a bird," and so on.  I do so love my Rem, even though its only been a couple of weeks since we got her. I would sincerely appreciate whatever help you could offer me.  I will endeavor to repay the money and/or become a future donor.  An upcoming hysterectomy has tied up all of our money for the next several months -- far too long to wait for Remie.

Rachael' story:

Rachael was a pound puppy; we adopted her when she was only 4 months old so we have had her all the time. She is a very good dog. She knows a lot of tricks-- her favorite thing to do is play with her tennis balls. She can play roll the ball to a baby or she will chase it for a adult. She loves everyone and she thinks everyone should love her. She also loves the water. We lived by a creek once and she would sneak out and play in it. She is just a very loving dog, and I do not know what we would do without her.

Our kids are all grown so she is our baby. We need help in paying for this operation because we are trying to survive on social security, which is only $530 per month. My husband is disabled and I am not allowed to work because he needs 24 hour care. They wanted to send her to Portland on Sept. 13, but since I could not pay for the surgery the vet kept her for two days on administered medication to her, and now she is at home but she is confined to a small area and on anti-inflammatory medications. It is driving her nuts to not be able to move since she is a very active dog.

Pixy ~ Emergency Case

(no image available at this time)

Application received from Jennifer 9/30/00.  Pixy is one of those cases we had to move very quickly on.  She was scheduled to be euthanized on 10/1.  Surgery is now scheduled for 10/4 and this little baby will saved!  The surgery, approximately $600, will be paid for from our General Emergency Fund.  We sure could use your help!

Jennifer writes:

Pixy was treated at the hospital I work at after being struck by a car.  Her owners treated her until their funds ran out, at which time they decided to have her euthanized.  I decided to try to find the funds necessary for surgery and a new home before giving up on her.  She is quite lovable and quite treatable.  I could not let her perish.
