Season of Angels- November/December 2000

(Caeser's, Angel's and Quinn's stories are on their own pages....use the picture links at the bottom of each story to navigate between their information pages!)

Angel's Story:

*See the recent UPDATE to Angel's story below....one of those heartwarming happy ending types!*

This "Angel" was surrendered to the Luzerne County SPCA. One of the workers, Karen Steinmetz, at the shelter fell head over heels for this sweet loving, yet BLIND Eskie. Angel owes her life to this wonderful lady. Karen got the word out: Angel needed to be rescued. There was a very slim chance of her being adopted from the shelter. A better chance at being P.T.S. Karen contacted her friend, Paula Kiley-Placko who posted to rescue groups on the Internet. I heard about Angel from a fellow Kees rescuer. Then Henry House, Eskie rescue, (thru Paula) posted about her on the Eskie list. I called the shelter and said we would get her on Sat. Karen drove part way with Angel and almost turned around and headed home, WITH Angel. YES, Angel steals your heart VERY fast! She stayed overnight with us, then onto VA to her fosterMom Laurie Bame. Laurie already had plans to have Angel evaluated by a top VA Tech vet eye specialist.

Angel is 100% blind (although both Karen and I thought she could see something) and no medicine or surgery will return even a little of her sight. Angel is VERY amazing! Her smell and hearing are very sharp to enable her to do everything she does.

Angel is a very sweet and affectionate Eskielooking for a new home. Although she is completelyblind from glaucoma, she moves around verywell. Angel is 4 1/2 year old, standard Eskie, approximately 16 -17" tall and about25 pounds. She is good with other dogs, LOVESCHILDREN (you should see her tail wag whenshe hears a "little" voice) andis housebroken. Angel was taken to the shelterbecause "her" people didn't haveenough time for her--even though all shewanted to do was be around her human family.

Angel COULD actually be seeing today.....but her former owners did not take her back to the vet/eye specialist after the initial consultation in Dec 1999. They also did not give Angel her medication. So...she went blind and now the medication is useless and her blindness is permanent. At this time she needs no medical care beyond normal checkups and vaccinations, but her eyes should be watched for increased swelling. Angel is spayed and current on all vaccinations, including Lyme Disease and heartworm. She walks on a leash and will play chase the ball, if the ball has a jingly sound in it. She acts almost as normal as a sighted dog. She can find the couch and jump up on it herself.

She is available for adoption. At LaurieBame's, she started chasing Laurie's cats.Yes Angel could run around after the catsand not run into anything! Somehow she "sees"with her acute senses! She is now being fosteredby Nancy Heister in VA. Angel wants a familyto call her own. And remember, she LOVESkids! She attaches to kids like velcro!!

If you are interested in adopting Angel, please contact Nancy at eskie@firstva.com or me at pcassel@pa.net.

P.S.--This furgirl will steal your heart. After having her overnight, I cried whenI turned her over to JoAnna, the next RRerthat eventually met Laurie. In fact, JoAnnacried after having Angel for a few hours!Did I say........Angel is amazing??

***UPDATE TO ANGEL'S STORY***
Date: Nov 22, 2000

Hi Everyone!!! What a Thanksgiving I willhave! I am in my FOREVER home! I am sooooohappy, have so much to be thankful for!

OK, remember reading about the cats at Laurie'shouse? My prey drive kicked in and I startedchasing them. Laurie offered to foster becauseshe "knew" (teeheehee) that mebeing blind, I would NEVER bother the cats!Boy was she wrong! I navigated around thefurniture and table so well. I ran and didn'tbump into anything but I NEVER caught thecats! Can't say I didn't try! :)The cats didn't enjoy the chase and theywere not happy with me. So 2 weeks ago, FosterMomLaurie took me to Nancy Heister's house tobe fostered. You know how things are meantto happen. This was one of those times!

My new FosterMom, Nancy, got a call fromPJ, who recently had an Eskie mix named Leezajourney to the Bridge. PJ and her lab, Eli,missed Leeza SOOOOO much. PJ and Eli wantedanother Eskie, rescue or a puppy. Nancy hadboth. So guess what?? PJ is getting both......MEand a PUPPY will join us later. What could be better!?!? :)

My new Mom is a nurse! I lay beside her whenshe is on the computer. I share her and Eli'sbed (good it's a king size bed). Mom saysI'M a blessing and she loves me VERY much.I can climb up and down her stairs. I jumpup on her bed myself and nuzzle down withher. Yes I have a wonderful home! I thinkmy Mom thinks she's part dog. Mom is wearinga DOG COLLAR and noisy tags around HER ankle. She says it's so everyone knows where everyoneis at? Ummm, this is good tho, because Ican find Mom very fast. My hearing and smellare VERY good! Eli and I are getting alongwell. Around Christmas time, a puppy Eskieis joining our Blessed Home. Her name isLouisa. I will be the big sister and "guidedog" for Louisa. Wow, another pack member!

Mom sent a broadcast message to all her friendsand family. Mom wrote "I hope you allcan one day see the special child that she is". That's ME!! I can't waitto meet some of them on Thanksgiving day, and in the future!Boy do I have a lot to be thankful for! Especiallymy FOREVER home. AND Karen Steinmetz of theLuzerne County Shelter in PA. Karen NEVERgave up on me. She was on a mission to saveme and she did!!! I was THAT SPECIAL to her!!

One more thing...my new name is Emma. Momloves the tenderness and beauty of the nameEmma. Mom says I AM a real beauty! I am sohappy in my new home! She can call me anythingshe likes! But....don't call me late forsupper!
Angel Hugs & Kisses, Luv & Licks,
