December 1999- Cookie's
Story!

A cute little Eskie Furgirl needs our help. She was
rescued
10 years ago by her present owner. Her former family was
moving and could not take the dog with them (have
we heard this before?). Instead of letting Cookie go to a
shelter, Janet adopted her. Janet's 17 yr old Eskie died in
March 1999. Janet's daughter Teresa said she will NOT
let her Mom go thru the loss of another Eskie this year.
Well.....let's go to
Cookie's story!
Hi Friends,
My name is Cookie and I'm the sweetest 10 yr old Eskie angel!
Mom Janet rescued me when I was about a year old. My previous
owner was moving to a new house and wanted to give me up or even
have me put down because I was too much trouble. I wasn't that
much trouble. They were NOT "dog people"! They thought
I was disposable! |

Now though...I've
had a wonderful family for many years...super people willing
to give me a second chance on life! My Mom's job made us move
from Columbus OH to here, St Louis about 1 1/2 yrs ago. My human
sister lives in Columbus, OSU student.
I had a "brother"
Eskie but he went to the Rainbow Bridge in March 99. He was 17
years old!! When Buddy died I was sad and missed him so much....but
I had to put on a good front and try to cheer Mom up. Mom says
I helped her so much and I still am! It's a big job too!
About two months ago
I was urinating frequently and when Mom
took me to the vets, they originally thought it was just a bladder
infection, gave me antibiotics. It got better then worse again.
They changed antibiotics and took x-rays which didn't show anything.
The vet was thinking possibly kidney stones. An ultra sound found
a tumor on my bladder. Dr. Yavitz acted very quickly and referred
me to Associated Veterinary Specialists who only deal with referrals
and this type of surgery. Dr. Allen (Mom says one of the best
vets!) had a consultation with us one day and did the surgery
the next day. Dr. Allen said if you had to have a tumor...mine
was in the best spot for removal. It was large enough that he
only left a "little finger size" bladder. He said my
bladder would re-stretch back to almost normal size in about
6 months. Because the tumor was so large, he could not take as
much extra tissue as he would have liked to, so he put me on
Feldane ( a combination for cancer inhibition) and Hill's Science
Diet ND with some garlic added. I will probably be on the diet
the rest of my life. Canned food was a treat for me before, so
this could be good!! It is prescription food $48/case but Mom
said I will get it as long as I need to. The Feldane is a mild
chemotherapy treatment combination. Right now I have a 60 day
supply and the prescription is refillable. It must be made by
a hospital pharmacy as it is a compound. |
