Maggie, only 8 weeks old, weighing only 3.5 lbs., had Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) corrective surgery. The surgery was successful and now she enjoys a normal Eskie life. Her life expectancy if this disease was not stopped was 1-2 yrs. (Fostermom Anne Jones, Heart Bandits Chapter Director of KS and Western MO) Sammy's hip was dislocated and the hip ball and neck
were shattered. Angel, at 6 months old, this rescue puppy was adopted by the LaBarre family. She also has Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA). Angel's surgery is being scheduled through VA Tech. Her surgery will be very soon.
Maggie's story: Hi, I'm Little Maggie. I was bought by a Kansas City family from a breeder in Clinton MO. When I was taken for my vaccinations on 8/3, the vet informed my family that I had a holosystolic decrescendo heart murmur on the left side--grade 5 out of 6. Since my new family had purchased me to help soothe their aching heart from a recent eskie loss, the vet recommended they return me to the breeder or have diagnostic work-up done, etc. When my family contacted the breeder, they were told to return me and they would simply have me euthanized. My family could not handle that so their neighbor offered to contact a rescue person, who contacted Anne Jones. I joined Anne's rescue family on 8/9. I was only 8 weeks old and weighed 3.5 lbs. I'm suppose to grow up to be a mini, but I heard people saying that I was very small for an 8 week old puppy. My new Mom, Anne, took me to her vet for a second opinion. I had "Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA). The ductus arteriosus is a fetal vessel that connects the main pulmonary artery and descending aorta. During development it shunts blood away from the collapsed fetal lungs. Normally it closes shortly after birth during the transition from fetal to extrauterine life. In my case it didn't close which means, basically, the blood passes from my heart into my lungs little bits at a time. My life expectancy if this disease was not stopped was 1-2 yrs. Mom elected to go with Kansas State College. Because this is considered very delicate major surgery, there was a chance that a nearby artery or the aorta would be punctured--as the little flap that must be closed connects the two. Should this happen, my death was eminent. Even with this risk, Mom opted to go ahead with the surgery. Otherwise I would simply "go down hill" gradually until I eventually died. I had my operation on 8/11. The operation was successful and I am doing fine today! I can't thank my foster Mom enough. The surgery and medical costs were $714.72. Mom has received donations of $150. The Jake Fund's $345 collected in Chance's auction was applied to my surgery. This leaves a balance of $220. Donations from this auction will be used to pay in full the remaining balance. I appreciate ALL the help you can send my way and I'm VERY thankful I am alive today.... Eskie Hugs, Kisses, Love and Licks,
Sammy's Story: Hi, my name is Sammy. I am now 13 months old. I was originally an owner turn over at the Humane Society because the owner said I was too much for them to keep up with. I was adopted by another family when I was 10 months old. The new family had called Karren a couple of times to help them deal with chewing issues and basic puppy behavior trouble. I guess I chewed through the neighbors wood fence and my family didn't know what to do to stop the wood eating. They told Karren that I had gotten out of the yard a couple of weeks prior and was hit by a car but was not hurt and doing well. A week later my owners called Karren because I was still eating the fence. We didn't live too far from Karren so a couple days later on her way to PetsMart for adoption days, she decided to stop in unannounced and see what kind of damage I was actually doing. My owners were not home when she arrived. Karren was surprised that I did not bark or run to greet her at the gate. When the weather was nice my owners usually left me outside during the day. No barking eskie! This as you all know is very unusual. Karren thought maybe they had left me in the house so she walked around back to see the damage I did to the fence. She walked around back and there I was, curled up by the back sliding glass doors. I was scared and she knew I was not myself. I'm normally an extremely bouncy and friendly eskie. She immediately picked me because I wouldn't go to her. She took me along to PetsMart. At the store, she noticed I was not putting any weight on my leg. It hurt when I did that. Karren called my owners that night to tell them she took me from their yard and questioned them as to what might be wrong with my leg. Dad said that it was from the car accident and the vet x-rayed it and it was just bruised. Karren asked him for the vet information so I could get copies of the x-rays and have her vet check me out in the morning. My Dad gave her the run around. Sooo.....My NEW fostermom finally told my ex-Dad that she was not allowing me to be returned to them. Yea Mom!!! So we went to the vet on Monday morning and had x-rays taken. My hip was dislocated and the hip ball and neck were shattered. I don't remember being hit by a car. It could have been from a blow with an object. The vet said it could have been either and I had no other injuries bruising or abrasions. Since my ex-owners lied to Karren, she will never know for sure. I had surgery the next Monday to remove the hip ball and neck which will allow the muscle to form a false socket for the remaining bone and with a lot of time I will be 100% with maybe a slight limp. While at PetsMart the day before my trip to the vet, I was lucky enough to have someone fall in love with me. I am now in a great new home. Rich, my new owner, is a retired grandpa who just wants a buddy to hang out with. My new Dad is home all of the time and has the grandkids come over after school. He has done a great job of nursing me back to health. I am now surrounded by love! I even have a great big cow in a pasture behind my house to chase and bark at and lots of kids to play with and love me. (Of course the cow is on the other side of the fence). I have also given up the wood eating. I never knew life could be so good. My operation cost $400. I've been told that you dog lovers make it possible for lots of dogs to live happy, normal, healthy lives. So what if I walk with a limp!! Thank you for making this all possible. I love ya! Eskie Hugs, Kisses, Love and Licks,
Angel's Story: Hi, my name is Angel. Why do you think my name is Angel? Yes that's right, my family thinks I am their baby! And I am!! I was adopted by my family in May 1999 when I was 6 months old. I have Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) and I need an operation soon. The ductus arteriosus is a fetal vessel that connects the main pulmonary artery and descending aorta. During development it shunts blood away from the collapsed fetal lungs. Normally it closes shortly after birth during the transition from fetal to extrauterine life. In my case it didn't close which means, basically the blood passes from my heart into my lungs little bits at a time. I have had it since birth. My Mom is a college student and is student teaching this semester. Ever since she was told I have this problem, she was wondering how she would pay for my surgery. I heard her say that she is trusting God that the finances will be there to pay for her surgery. My Dad had an accident at work two years ago. He has been going through the doctor, work and finally a lawyer, to work out the problem. I also have 'my' children who are very attached to me. My human sister even sits and whispers all of her problems to me. I listen well then I turn around and give her kisses! Dad and I are leaving on Thurs Sept 23 for VA Tech. Since Mom can not miss school, Dad will be there for me. My surgery will be Fri. If everything goes well, Dad and I can go home on Sat. I have lots of things to be thankful for. For my family rescuing me, for providing love and a loving home for me and to all of you for providing me my second chance at life. I just want to be a healthy, normal, bouncy little Eskiegirl that can look forward to a long wonderful life! We will not know the exact cost until the operation is completed. The estimate is $800-$1,000 (thankfully less than the $1,200-$1,500 estimate of other vets and/or schools). Mom will send the receipts to Pat Cassel. Please keep me and my family in your prayers. This is very delicate surgery and I am trying to be brave. Mom must really be scared cuz she is crying. This is my chance to live a full LONG life. Thank you for giving me this chance. XOXOXOXOXOXOXO!! Eskie Hugs, Kisses, Love and Licks,
As noted in the results, enough money was raised to pay off ALL three bills! We came only $6.00 short of the TOTAL amount for ALL three bills. The $6.00 to finish off Angel's bill will most likely be taken care of locally then! Close enough anyway! Thanks to EVERYONE again for helping out!!!! Please tell others about these auctions as we often have great doggy items that are not Eskie-related. The more the merrier and the more good we can do!
