Winner: Karren Nichols (and her eskie BeBe)

Question: "How is your eskie like, or dislike, you?"

You can scroll down to get right to the winning entry, but first are further details on the October contest:

The entries were sure exciting for the October Contest! The contest asked for you to tell us how your eskie is(or isn't) like you(or vice versa), and we had some wonderful reading! We offered a wire crate and a donation to the Henry Fund up for the prize. Though we would have loved to have awarded a few prizes, we had to settle with just one winner for the month, and that went to Karren Nichols and her eskie, BeBe!

Here was more specifically what we wanted to know for the contest: We have probably all heard how people and their dogs often "look" alike. Well, this month, we want to know how you and your dog are OR are not alike in CHARACTER! Yep...we want to know how your dog acts like you OR how you act like your dog. So, tell us all about how you and your dog are alike or different...your furry reflection or alter-ego?!?!

And....a little more about the prize and donation for the month:

First off is the wire crate. We offered a choice this time. We had winner's choice of either a Medium or Large wire crate made by Woodstream. The brand name is Thrifty but Nifty, and are made by Woodstream(an EKCO division), and are sold as economy crates. They are nothing too fancy, and certainly are not as hardy as the best of the best out there, but they do work as good basic crates. We've used some of these refurbished units on our dogs and they're just fine! Retail value on these crates is $30 to $50.

In the pics above are two different photos of these crates(probably a "small" in the pictures). Sizes are:

Medium: 29" long, 22" wide, and 25" high

Large: 35" long, 23" wide, and 26" high

Karren chose the Large size, and we decided to throw in a crate pad for her as well, as we had to make a couple for our dogs at the time anyway, and thought one more wouldn't be much trouble!

And, now....for the "donation" for the contest. We offered $10 sent to the Henry Fund.

Here is a brief description of the Henry Fund(as described by Stacey): For those of you who don't know: Henry is a male American Eskimo about 5 years old that I rescued a couple of months ago. He has an injured right front leg that was apparently broken at one point and then allowed to re-heal in the wrong position. We are raising money to have his leg surgically repaired and any donations should be sent to Carolina Veterinary Specialist at 5505 West Friendly Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27410. Please put ATTN: Stacey Dickey on the envelope and For: HENRY FUND in the corner of the check. He is neutered and fully vaccinated and will be needing a home after the leg is completely healed. Click here for Stacey's email address. Thus, we sent $10 to the fund in the winner's name following the contest. Not much, but every little bit helps, and this month, we're sending the "little bit" Henry's way. Stacey wrote to me during the contest, and I thought her words would be nice here: "I think it is great the way so many people have pitched in to help Henry. I will try to attach a picture of Henry with this e mail(see below). And you are right, every little bit helps!!! All of the 5-10 dollar donations have added up very nicely. Thanks again for thinking of Henry!!"

And now...for Karren's Winning Entry:

Well first I have to tell you about BeBe. I found her at the local Animal Shelter with a sign on her cage saying "Caution Aggressive Dog." In the cage was this little dirty, matted dog curled up on a towel looking up at me with big brown eyes. She wouldn't move. I fell in love with her instantly. See I grew up in foster homes so I have always had a soft spot for the cast aside souls. I asked a worker at the shelter if I could visit with her. She said that if she could get her to come out of the cage without biting her I could. Sure enough this little bundle curled right up in my lap and pleaded with me to take her home. The worker was amazed. She had tried to bite everyone she came in contact with. (She just didn't like being locked up and knew I would rescue her) So after visiting with her everyday for a week they finally let me bring her home. We went straight to the groomers for a shave down!! Ever since she came home we have been joined at the hip. We think alot alike. Sometimes it's hard to tell who is the person and who is the dog. Our day starts the same everyday. The alarm clock goes off and we hit the snooze button at least five times. She looks up at me and says "I don't want to get up." I look at her and scratch her tummy and say "I don't want to get up". This goes on for about half an hour minimum all the while both of us whining "I want to just stay in bed today and cuddle, do I have to get up?" Finally we get up we both go potty (of course one goes outside to do this;-) Then into the shower I go with BeBe right there the whole time she sits by the tub and we talk. She doesn't actually get in but she does peek in and say hello often. We have breakfast and she says can't we go back to bed now? The whole time I am getting ready for work she is trying to get me to come back to bed and cuddle. We both are thinking is it Saturday yet. And believe me that is where I would rather be. So it is off to work only to come home and see her leaping from the top of the stairs into my arms saying "It's about time you got here, lets go to bed". She leads me into the kitchen because she wants a cookie. We both have a snack and watch Animal Planet while I brush her lots. By the time 10:00 p.m. comes along she is looking very sleepy and is saying "Can we go to bed now? Please." And off we go. We both sleep on our backs with the covers up to our chins. It is amazing how much we have in common, we both snore ;-). We both have to drive the car. We both demand to be petted and refuse to be ignored. We both love to take naps and cuddle. We both have great smiles and love to go shopping. The list goes on and on. I think the most important bond we share is we were both cast aside and both lonely until we found each other.

Karren & BeBe Nichols
