March 1999 Contest Page

Summary:

Prize: Two "ZooBalls" and a lintbrush(see pics below, note and description in the text).

Featured Donation: Canine Companions for Independence(see description below)

Winner: Bonnie Van Clief (and her eskies)

Question: We merely wanted to know what were your eskie(s) favorite "Eskimo Games"....games they play to amuse themselves(and you as well!).

You can scroll down to get right to the winning entry, but first are further details on the March contest:

Well....we definitely had some fun playing "Eskimo Games" this time around! We ended up choosing Bonnie Van Clief's entry for our winner this month. Hopefully, we'll all get to do this again in a future contest, so keep your eyes open for the Eskimo Games that your eskies like to play, and we'll see what neat ideas come in then! We offered a modest prize package this time of two ZooBalls and a lint brush, which we'll describe more on in a bit here. For the month's featured donation, we offered our monthly "tidbit" to Canine Companions for Independence, which is described below.

For our featured donation this month, as mentioned, was Canine Companions for Independence(CCI). CCI is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to serve the needs of people with disabilities by providing trained service, hearing and social dogs and by providing continuing support to ensure the success of the working team. CCI is funded by donations, group and service club contributions, grants, and ongoing fund raising activities. CCI receives no government funding. Thus, with the great resource they are providing to our society, we decided to offer our monthly contribution to CCI. Though their "primary dogs" used are not AEDs, the service and resources they provide are very worthy, and we believe this kind of organization is a great benefit to our society. They have a few offices throughout the US, but their headquarters are in California. They have a website with further information on it as well. In all, we're glad to see this kind of organization helping not only people out, but also improving the human/canine bonds that often are overlooked or taken for granted.

CCI's website can be found by clicking here!

Their other contact information is as follows:

National Office
P.O. Box 446

And, for the month's prize package, was a set of 2 ZooBalls, and 1 lint brush. With eskies, the lint brush is self-explanatory! However.....I think most of us know that one can never have too many....one for each room, one(or more) in the "Spitz-Cruiser", and maybe a few other handy places.....we're sure Bonnie will have a good use for it! Some may be aware of ZooBalls, but if you're not, or if you just want to learn a bit more about them, please check out the ZooBalls page we have setup. We chose ZooBalls for a prize to the month's contest so that we could share these great little toys with others. Our Shelby just LOVES her ZooBalls, and it brings a new meaning to "Eskimo Games" in our house! She can keep herself amused for a LONG time with those bouncy little critters! In the prize pack, we offered 1 Owen Owl ZooBall as well as 1 Freddie Fish ZooBall. Shelby's first ZooBall was an owl, and the first one(and all that have followed) are still in tact, though a couple are probably under the bed or in other "strategic locations". Freddie the Fish was only recently "introduced" to Shelby, and honestly, with all those "frillies" on the fish, we were a bit concerned, but no problem...Shelby just LOVES the fish too. In fact, with all those fins, it means all the more appendages to flop the fish around with!!! WARNING: some dogs will destroy toys like this, so keep an eye on your eskie if you get a toy like this. And, yes, we sent Bonnie both the ZooBalls(with the cards) as well as the lint brush. (note...the lint brush is NOT to scale in the picture above...it's a normal size brush! And, the fish looks kind of crazy, but it's just because his "appendages" and "lips" were flattened a bit on the scanner bed....once he's played with, he'll be a "flying fish" in no time!!!)

OK.....the question for the month was on the note of "Eskimo Games". We wanted to know: what your eskie's favorite "games" were. Yes....we asked you to tell us ALL about your eskie's favorite ways of amusing him or herself, and probably you as well, right! Since eskies are so creative and resourceful, "Eskimo Games" is something most of us are probably familiar with. And, YES, one of Shelby's favorite ways of amusing herself is bouncing, tossing, or just winging her ZooBalls around. So...ZooBalls and "Eskimo Games" go very well together indeed! We hope that Bonnie and her crew, who seem to make quite a "team", will enjoy these even half as much as Shelby does- as that will be quite a bit!!!......

And now...for Bonnie's Winning Entry:

Eskimo Soccer

Four of our Eskies, Storm, Bird, Prize and Star like to play "soccer". Bat fills in as a substitute player sometimes. They have a somewhat "flattened" soccer ball. Storm actually hits the ball with her front paws going from one end of the yard to the other. If she makes it all the way to the other side of the yard-she has scored a point. The other dogs try to get the ball away from her by batting it and trying to knock it away from her. If the other Eskies get the ball, they bat it around and try to go to the other end of the yard. Sometimes Storm, a nice sized standard, "cheats" and grabs the ball in her mouth and runs with it....The other Eskies have a rough time doing this since they are minis and their mouths are much smaller. There is a lot of barking and "play" growling that goes on during the entire game, not to mention all of the human type yelling for their favorite player. So far, Storm is the leading point maker.....but the others are challenging her lead every chance they get...

Bonnie
