April 1999 Contest Page
Summary of the contest: Prizes: 3 sets of dog books(see listing and details below), offered by Natalie Harris Featured Donation: Heart Bandits Question: Not really a question...this month's contest was a "caption contest"....where you come up with a caption for the picture below....see details down the page!
You can scroll down to get right to the winning entry, but first are further details on the April contest: OK....Natalie Harris really pulled some punches for us, so we want to give her a four paw applause in appreciation for her generosity. She offered 10 dog related books for prizes, and we decided to split them up into 3 groups of offerings. Natalie will send the books directly to the prize winners after the contest, so we tried to make it easier on her by only having 3 winners. How we worked this is that there was a First place winner...who will get to choose any 4 of the books from the list below. We had a second place winner, who will get to choose any 3 of the remaining 6 books(after first place winner makes choices). A Third place winner will receive the remaining 3 books(sorry, no choice at this point.....you'll get the 3 left). However....take a look at this list that Natalie sent me(including her comments on them), and you'll see there were some great choices. Again...One first place winner will get choice of any 4 books, one second place winner will get to choose 3 of the remaining 6 books, and a third place winner will get the remaining 3 books. The list: FINALLY I have a chance
to sit down and give you the list of 2 copies of The Complete Idiot's Guide to a Well-Trained Dog, by Jack and Wendy Volhard. Nice-sized books, very reader friendly. 1 copy of Save That Dog! Start: Care and Training for the Life of Your Dog, by Race 1 copy of Control of Canine Genetic Diseases, by George A. Padgett, DVM. Probably most useful to breeders, but fascinating to anyone who has purebred dogs. OK...thanks Natalie....I see quite a few I know I'd like to have....BUT...we're offering up ALL 10 of these books via the contest, so there will be some great reading for some folks in this.... OK....and for our Featured Donation this month, it was a great honor to be able to offer, with the help of Lindy and Natalie, a generous amount once again to Heart Bandits! As many of us know, Bob Davis, Heart Bandits founder, passed away early this spring. It is in honor of Bob and his great efforts that we were proud to once again feature Heart Bandits as the monthly donation. Heart Bandits is a national rescue organization for Eskies(American Eskimo Dogs), and Bob was not only the founder but the backbone of HB until his untimely parting. We offered our monthly $10, Lindy also be offered her $10, and Natalie(with Max's approval!) offered a donation of $30. Thus, we had $50 going to HB this month. We know it isn't all they need, but every little bit helps, and we most definitely wanted to pay tribute to Bob Davis and HB...as well as ALL who have been involved in the various HB chapters over the years....you all are a special breed! To learn more about Heart Bandits, please see the Heart Bandits web site! OK....this month's contest was actually a simple one. Laurie Bame sent us the idea and we found a perfect picture for the idea, so this was our first attempt at a "Caption Contest". Simply put....all you had to do was take a gander at the picture below, and then send us your idea(s) for a "caption" for the picture. We chose 3 captions(ranked 1st, 2nd, 3rd as noted in our prize info) to display(and list a few more great ones). Some funny details on the picture are noted BELOW the captions as well....just some "for your information" stuff! Thanks to EVERYONE who sent us some neat ideas!
OK...Shannon sent in #1, Ritchey sent in #2, and Tina sent in #3, and they will receive the books via the "pecking order" noted! We couldn't help but love #1....who wouldn't want an eskie working for them??? CUTE! #2 is delightful as well, and #3 is sooo understandable it's hilarious! If you've ever had an eskie in the car when you go through one of those fast food drive thrus, you'll be glad if they're in a crate in the back seat! When will they ever sell a small "puppy biscuit" pack for the poochies!?!?!?! Can't brag about the McD's around here, but you gotta love the slogan, and Tina hit a great point with it! Some other great slogans are listed here as "honorable mentions:
Actually, it was hard to put them in any order....there were lots of great ones, and many of these "honorable mentions"(HM) are just fabulous too! We just had to settle with 3 "winners" and that's what we chose. The first HM about the vet not being in is wonderful...wouldn't it be great if all the vet techs were eskies!?!?! AND...we just LOVED the PIII one...too funny! The story behind the pic is what makes it funny! Actually, YES, this is Shelby in the pic! However...the monitor in the pic was not hooked up to any computer at the time, no keyboard there, just the monitor on the table. I HAD just had the monitor out to check it and make sure it was working fine, just prior to packing it up and shipping it out(was parting with it). This was actually an old mono VGA(grey scale) monitor that I used with my old "286" system for many years, and after upping to a Pentium, this was being parted with. Thus, asking about a PIII is a riot....a "286" compared to PIII is, well, almost like the 19th century vs the 20th century....not much comparison! Because this was a mono VGA, you'll notice that the "back" or "tube" part of the monitor is MUCH smaller than a current color SVGA....not sure if anyone noticed, but that's what it was. Served great for 5 years, and it also got its last hurrah as a "prop" in this pic of Shelby! She is such a doll, and when she had hopped up on the chair, I was only too delighted to be able to get this picture! Certainly one of those picturESKIE moments! Now....enough for digressions...MANY, MANY thanks to everyone who sent in neat ideas, and we hope to do something with a caption contest in the future...it was a lot of fun!!! And, of course VERY big thank yous to Natalie Harris, Lindy Kohn, and Laurie Bame for making this a great contest offering! March 1999 Contest Page ::: May 1999 Contest Page
