The American Eskimo Dog

-A little about the breed-

The American Eskimo Dog(AED), also affectionately known as "eskies" by many of their owners, are a "spitz" type breed of dog. The American Eskimo Dog, whose ancestry can be traced back thousands of years, has more directly descended from the German Spitz, from the same family of dogs which the Pomeranian and Keeshond have also descended from. Though the German Spitz can be of different colors, eskies are always white or a biscuit white color, with "sharp black points" highlighted in their nose and eyes, while their ears are alert in high pointed style.

The AED is an affectionate, loving companion dog. Lively and alert, they are known to be "watchdogs" of great detail, sounding a warning bark at sounds and sights that are out of order. This trait can lead some eskies, if not curtailed early on, to be somewhat "yappy". Well trained though, eskies are a devoted, faithful companion. The AED's white coat may seem a chore to tend to, but the coat contains an oil that repels dirt and stains, and with regular brushing(grooming), a good diet, and exercise, the eskie's coat can be one of great ease to care for. Not surprisingly, the eskie has garnered the nickname "The Dog Beautiful" over the years...one look at a fine eskie and you'll know why. However...the true beauty of eskies, according to many eskie owners, is the beauty "within" in their caring, devoted, friendly, and even playful nature.

The United Kennel Club(UKC) has recognized the AED since the early part of the 20th century, while the American Kennel Club(AKC) has only recognized the breed since the mid-1990s. The AED can be in any of three varieties, or sizes: toy, miniature, and standard(from smallest to largest). The AKC recognizes all three sizes, while the UKC only recognizes minis and standards. Sizes are roughly differentiated as follows(though male and female are sometimes different, and the AKC and UKC have some differences, so check their breed standards for further details):

There are three separate size divisions of the American Eskimo Dog (all measurements are heights at withers):
  • -Toy: 9 inches up to, and including, 12 inches;
  • -Miniature: over 12 inches- up to, and including, 15 inches;
  • -Standard: over 15 inches- up to, and including, 19 inches.
  • There is no preference for size within each division.
