4X4 Vans

In the 80s, Sport Utility Vehicles, which had been around for a long time, finally became very popular. Jeep Cherokee leading the way, of course! Mini-vans got front wheel drive, and these two types of vehicles did major damage to the full size van and full size station wagon markets. However.....what kind of storage space can you get in a 4wd SUV? Not much for the most part. GM made Suburbans were the heftiest of the factory 4wds at this time, though International had had their Travelall up until 1975 as well. Most full size vans are not the greatest for traction and winter driving.

Well....more than a few folks have realized that having the huge cargo capacity of a full size van AND normal 4wd ability combined IS a possibility. As a "special order", you can have a full size van converted to 4wd. However......this is only for NEW vehicle purchases. You want your old van converted? You'll probably have to do it yourself! Interestingly, there ARE a number of folks who have done just that! In fact, there are quite a few great pages on the net with 4x4 van info. Please see the links below!

Pictured below is a '73 Dodge 4x4 van.

Though Ford, with their "longer nose" and more truck like front end, seem to be the easiest to convert, Chevy, GMC, AND Dodge vans CAN be converted. It takes a lot of work, but many have found the effort to be worth it. SOMETIMES you can even find a previously converted van for sale! Ford and GM full-size vans can STILL be converted, now by Quigley, or some other specialty converter, from a new van. Pathfinder used to do the Quadravan conversions, so you'll see them every once in a while.

Above is an '86 Ford E350 Quadravan. I love the "Spitzy" color to this one......definitely interesting! All in all, a 4x4 van can be immensely practical and useful. Though there are a number of links I can list, I will limit it, and besides, only one is necessary. Steve Best has THE 4x4 van site that has lots of info and great links and most everything you'd want to know. AND, if you can't find what you want to know.....try the 4x4vans email list......

Steve Best's 4x4 van page....THE page for anyone interested in 4x4 vans!

Quigley Motor Company- does specialty conversion, including 4x4 vans!

...just about any other links or info you might want on 4x4 vans is somewhere on Steve's page......and if you find his "first encounter with a Hummer" story ....enjoy it......!
