'84 Jeep Cherokee
Well, Jeep #3 was a mixed blessing. 4 doors, 4 cylinder AMC engine, auto tranny, Select Trac 4wd, and a pretty bare bones package otherwise. Mostly ran great, but had its share of problems too. Got this one fairly cheap for the time in late '96, but that was partially due to t-case problems. I "figured" I could find a replacement or rig it up some how and keep it working. Well, I had squat for luck finding a t-case and just pretty much drove it as a 2wd wagon most of the time I had it. I tried to rig the linkage up so it could be more manageable than the stock(aka stupid) vacuum line mode shifter, but it didn't control what was apparently interior t-case problems as well. Being a 4 banger, power was not in its favor either. Below is a picture of it from fall of '96:
I got about 19 mpg with this wagon, but considering that I could get about 16 mpg with a full size Jeep, not to mention lots more guts in a FSJ, I kept my eyes open for a larger Jeep again. Early in '97, the J10 pickup popped up in the paper and that became my vehicle thereafter. See the J10 page for that info. When the engine gave me serious troubles on this 84 Cherokee, and was in need of major repairs or replacement, I decided just to part with it as it was and concentrate on the Pickup. Thus, a good 6 months with this Jeep was nice but left a lot to be desired from a 4wd vehicle. The turning, handling, heater, interior, body, and especially the tailgate/hatchback design were better on these little Jeeps, but all that just masks a second rate engine/driveline combo. In 1987, when Jeeps got Fuel Injection AND they first used their AMC designed 4.0l inline 6 cylinder engine did these smaller Jeeps get the power they so desperately needed.
