Welcome to the Pioneer Picks Page 2
Here is our second group of Best of Breed "Pioneer Picks": WordTabs is just plain simple. It is a plain text editor, but goes far beyond that. The NotePad and WordPad programs that came with Win95 are, of course, rather limited and not very feature packed. WordTabs is one of the best of this kind of program we've found. It is also freeware, and a small download(can fit on a floppy) so we think all the more of it! WordTabs features multiple files being open at the same time, AND best of all, each file is opened on a NEW tab. Actually, somewhat similar to the NetCaptor tabs, but this is for files. FAR superior to using the "Windows" drop down menu in programs! You can flip between files, and have the clipboard viewable on the side(actually quite handy). You can save as RTF and make this program much more functional that your average "text editor", but it's also lean, speedy, and efficient, so you won't even miss those stock Windows programs! Though not a full featured high end word processor, WordTabs can go a long way in being a word processor for a lot of us! We do have a full featured Word Processor that we use too for other purposes, but we've found WordTabs to be handy and practical for many lighter duty uses. You can setup up WT to be your default text and RTF program, so it will automatically open files of those types, and it's very capable of handling that and more. Another intelligently designed program, and we highly recommend this great utility! eFax.com is actually a service. If you haven't heard of it, you need to check it out. If you have heard of it, well, check it out again! Though it may not be a service for everyone, it is a handy service for many of us. What "eFax" is, is essentially a "fax-to-email" service. What's best though is that when you sign up, you get your OWN fax number, which is a regular phone number(though probably not in your area code). It's a free service(though they have fee based services such as a toll free fax line number, and more), all you have to do is sign up! You get a "fax viewer" program(small download or email attachment), and you're all set to go! Once you get your new "fax number", you can give it a try. ALL faxes that come in to your unique number are then sent to YOUR designated email address as "efax attachments". (This is where the "viewer" is necessary.) You open the attachment and there it is...THE exact fax sent by the sender! You can print it out or just view it! So, why is this handy? Well...if you're like we are and don't really have the "space" or resources to invest in a dedicated fax(machine, line, etc.!), but still would like the ability to send/receive occassional faxes, then this is a SUPER service. And, that it's free(it's advertiser supported with the fax viewer, but you're the only one who sees the ads, and they're not overbearing at all!), makes it all the more valuable. Save yourself hundreds of dollars on that fax machine, and hundreds more by not having a separate fax line run in, and just sign up for this free service. Setup your computer so you can "send" faxes directly via your modem and then "receive" them via your new eFax number(which just gets routed to your email), and you're in business. Another intelligent method of communication in this day and age, and definitely worth a LOT more than its price!!! Check out eFax today...it doesn't cost you anything and it might just be what you've been looking for to fill the "inexpensive and space saving" fax gap! We are continually interested in discovering more programs and services that might be worthy of being a Best of Breed "Pioneer Pick". Though we are on the lookout ourselves, if you are aware of any great(and preferably free) programs and services that are intelligent and practical, as well as much better than anything else out there, feel free to let us know, but dropping us email at Pages@eskie.net, and we'll give it consideration! There are a few types of programs that we are still looking for "ideal" versions of, but have yet to find anything really worthy of a Pioneer Picks designation(and believe us, we've tried LOTS of these). Namely, we have yet to find an ideal "email client" or an ideal "address book" type program. We really want something that is portable(small), flexible, and just simply practical. We're kinda picky, but hey, why should any of us settle for anything less??? We'd also like to see other great programs, but the email and address books we've seen(many of them at that) have been very disappointing, so we're still on the lookout(while using less than ideal programs for the time being). Any help, suggestion, etc. are greatly welcome! Thanks...and we hope these pages have been a help to others! Do let us know what you think of any of these "picks"!
