These pages are devoted to the life and art of Nellie Littlehale Umbstaetter / Nellie Littlehale Murphy(1867-1941). There are essentially two phases of her work; early and later. Her "early" work is under the names Nellie(sometimes spelled Nelly) Littlehale or Nellie(Nelly) Littlehale Umbstaetter. Her "later" works are under the name Nellie(Nelly) Littlehale Murphy. The different last names reflect her married names, but also tend to divide her work some too. Thus, we have divided our "Nellie" pages into a few main areas. There is one word that keeps coming to mind when viewing Nellie's work, and that work is "Delightful".....we hope you will find her work as delightful and as much a pleasure as we have!

Biographical information is just that: information regarding Nellie's life and times.

Her "Early Works" that we have for viewing here are mostly of a style for younger and imaginative audiences, and are excellent examples of illustrations and paintings for children. The sample at the right is a piece called "Ready for Winter" and is merely one of her fascinating pieces!

Her "Later Works" that we have for viewing here are mostly of the still life or landscape scenery type. Though on a different scale than her early works, one can readily see the same attention to detail and style that is present in her earlier pieces. At the left is a sample of a bird and flowers still life.

Also, we have a page of "Other Works" that are not listed in the above sections that "lists" some works by Nellie that we have been made aware of.

The "Wonder World Books" section is devoted to the set of books published by Geo. L. Shuman Co. in the early part of the 20th century. We highlight these books here as the earliest editions included a number of Nellie's "fairyland" and story type paintings. Apart from Nellie's work in them, these are incredibly fascinating books of an excellent quality that isn't often seen in the latter part of the 20th century. Truly a wonderful set of books, and we have tried to assemble as much information on the set of books, including its transition from "Our Wonder World" to the "New Wonder World" series later on!
