Seals: Aquatic Dogs
How could I make a section of superior pages and not have an area for seals?!?!?! Seals, along with dogs, have been one of my fond loves for many years now, and so here you will find a small appreciation for the Seals of the world! Most of us are familiar with the "circus seals"(which are usually sea lions), and even the cute white harp seal pups, but there are many varieties of seals, and a lot to know and appreciate about them.
In the painting above are some older(post-cute white pup stage) harp seals pictured. There are essentially two classes of seals. "True Seals" and not-"true" seals, or "true seals" and "the rest". "True" seals do NOT have ear flaps, they have ear HOLES. A perfect example of this is the harbor seal, which is common along the northern coasts of America and Canada. Harbor seals are usually a grey splotchy in appearance. I think they're cool! A typical example of a non-true seal is the "Sea Lion" or common "circus seal"....they are SEA LIONS and NOT true seals! Closely related, but still not true seals! There are many varieties of seals, from the harbor, harp, elephant, and other well known seals, there are also lesser known varieties such as the Ross seal, Baikal seal, Ribbon seal(see example in picture below), Weddell seal, and many many more! A true seal lover finds that keeping track of the different "breeds" of seals is about as exciting as seeing how different many of the canine breeds are!
As mentioned, this is a Ribbon seal in the above image! Notice the white "bands" or "ribbons" that adorn his dark coat otherwise. Neat markings on these seals for sure! One thing I've found interesting is that my interest in seals and dogs actually draws many parallels. Though this may sound silly, seals could actually be considered "aquatic dogs". They're both called pups when young, and the noise they make, we call a bark! Besides, seals really do seem quite a personable animal even though they are water creatures and not land creatures like dogs! Prior to getting my American Eskimo Dog, I told a friend I was interested in the breed. She told me that it was no surprise, afterall...eskies look like baby seals! She was, of course, referring to the common harp seal pup(which ARE darling!). I hadn't thought of it, but had to laugh....afterall, she DID HAVE a point! Nearly two years later and I still just love my eskie(and she does remind me of a baby seal often enough!)! I've been interested in seals for about the last 20 years, and have collected quite a variety of things with seals on them. From stuffed animals to slippers to notebooks to posters to pencils to even a seal comforter! And yes, I've got a huge collection of stuffed seals, and yes, THAT even includes lots of beanie style seals! Below is a picture of a set of seals(mother and baby harp seal) that are just like the second stuffed seals I got some 20 years ago! Cute, aren't they?
Of course, you can find ALL kinds of things with seals on them. Though I don't "collect" a whole lot of different things, if it's got a seal or an eskie on it, you can bet I'll be flattered! Whether a stuffed seal, a seal "tea set", like the one below, or the cast seals in the upper corner picture, there are lots of seal-interesting items for us seal lovers! Best experience for one of us though remains to go see some real seals, and if you can get up close and personal at a marine or aquarium....how great! Truly a wonderful animal!
I hope to be adding more to this seal section in time, but hope you like the start of it!!
Well...make it a great day! :)
