Western Women- Calamity
Jane
 |
Calamity Jane was born Martha
Jane Cannary. Her biographical information is sketchy in areas
for a number of reasons...not only is a lot not known....she,
and others, were known to fabricate and/or fudge on facts in
her time. Thus, the life of Calamity Jane is often riddled with
as much fiction as fact. Interestingly, Calamity Jane has been
one of the famous faces of the old west and her life still brings
up as much imagination to youngsters today as it ever did! She
was born circa 1850 and died August 1st, 1903 in Terry, SD. She
is buried in Mount Moriah Cemetery near Deadwood SD. She was
buried, at her request, near Wild Bill Hickok. |

Though Calamity Jane is often
thought of as a rough and tumble tomboy type, the photo at the
right shows another side to her. A striking contrast to the harsh,
masculine side of her that shows up in most pictures and images
of her; she was young and attractive in this photo, but as many
have noted, her harsh life and hard times led her to age beyond
her years, and by the time of her death at 53 years old, she
looked much older than that. Though it is not exactly known where
she got her nickname, it is generally accepted that she came
to be referred that as to all the "calamity" that seems
to always be around her. She lived hard and was known to be quite
ornery at times. |

Jane even "wrote" her own "autobiography"
late in her life, and also signed up to give "one woman"
stage shows. She showed up quite drunk for one of the first shows
in Minneapolis, MN, and they were soon called off after her "disastrous"
stage showing. Her autobiography seems also to be riddled with
fiction. Quite possibly due to her "live for the moment"
lifestyle which didn't leave much room for reflecting on the
facts and past at all. Even SHE had come to believe that some
of the "legends" about her were actually true! The
life and times of Calamity Jane are certainly interesting and
full of adventure, but we must remember that there really are
two Calamity Janes.....the "real" Jane, and the "legend"
known as Calamity Jane. The "real" Calamity Jane not
only was the inspiration for the legend, but she also fueled
that legend and made it real in its own way. However...the legend
of Calamity Jane is only a small part of the overall story of
Calamity Jane. |
